Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, covering 8 ha (20 acres), has walled gardens, woodland walks, formal and informal gardens, with exotic plants. The site is owned by the Fox-Strangeways family, the Earls of IIchester.
In the 18th century the family built a new house on the site, however it was burned down in 1913. The family returned to Melbury House, the family seat. However the walled garden was maintained and developed as we know it today, in particular by the 4th Earl of IIchester.
The garden is also a wedding venue.
