During its history of more than 600 years it has been closely linked with the Livingston family ( Earls of Linlithgow, Earls of Callendar and Earls of Newburgh) and the Forbes family. The latter family still owns the majority of the estate. 

Callendar House has played host to many prominent historical figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots, Cromwell, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Queen Victoria.
