The Palazzo San Sebastiano, now the City of Mantua Museum (Museo della Città di Palazzo San Sebastiano), was built by Francesco II Gonzaga between 1506 and 1508 to house the Triumphs of Caesar by Mantegna (c. 1431 – 1506). The palace became Francesco's preferred residence.
In the seventeenth century the large canvases of the Triumphs were sold, which are today preserved at the Royal Palace of Hampton Court. Vincenzo I Gonzaga had also some of the precious gilded ceilings removed to decorate his new apartments in the Doge's Palace.
Over the following centuries the Palazzo San Sebastiano was used as a barracks, hospital and even a hospital until the end of the nineteenth century.
Since 2004 the palace houses the City Museum, where you can admire classical and Renaissance sculptures, a collection of paintings and frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as copies of the nine "Triumphs of Caesar"
