The Pre-Selections phase takes place every other year: during this phase, 24 candidates are chosen to participate in the Finals the following year. The Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Festival also takes place at the same time as the Pre-Selections phase, taking its inspiration from the history and tradition of the competition.
