Karlsruhe Palace & Garden were founded in 1715 when Carl Wilhelm began to make his retreat. It is now home to the main museum of the Badische Landesmuseum Karlsruhe.
The town grew around the house and became a 'fan town' . The extraordinary concentric design of the garden is determining the circular design of the town. It had 32 avenues radiating from the central tower. Today, the plan is more apparent from a map than from the ground. A botanic garden adjoins the Schlossgarten.
