Altes Museum, opened in 1830 and one of the five museums forming the "Museum Insel" (Museum Island), houses the Collection of Classical Antiquities. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the art and culture of the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans. It includes also the Münzkabinett with its display of ancient coins.

The museum was build by King Frederick William III of Prussia, whereas the plans were made by the famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
