Apsley House - Wellington Collection

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Apsley House is the London residence of the Dukes of Wellington, housing the large Wellington Collection, brought together by the 1st Duke (1769 – 1852) , the legendary Field Marshal and Statesman. The house is run by the National Heritage.

The personality, career and achievements of the 1st Duke are too large and important to give a full descriptions here, whereas his collection consists of a large number paintings, other artworks and memorabilia of his career, such as 83 paintings formerly in the Spanish royal collection and given to him by the Spanish King, furniture, sculpture, porcelain and silver. One of the highlights is Antonio Canova's heroic marble nude of Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker, made in 1802-1810, as well as some paintings of Titian.

'The Duke' bought the house in 1817 from his brother Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess of Wellesley, and had it completely remodelled by the architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt (1775–1852)

Famous is the Waterloo Gallery, named after the Duke's victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, where the Waterloo Banquets took place every year, in order to commemorate the historical victory (18 June 1815).
