Belvedere-The Lower Belvedere

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
The Belvedere houses a world famous art collection, which ranges from the Middle Ages, Austrian Baroque, Viennese Biedermeier, Viennese art around 1900, French impressionism, to the present day.

The collections are shown at three locations: the Upper Belvedere (Oberes Belvedere-OB), the Lower Belvedere (Unteres Belvedere-UB), and the Belvedere 21-B21.

The palace complex, with the Upper and Lower Palaces, the Orangerie and Palace Stables, was built according to Lucas von Hildebrandt's plans for Prince Eugene of Savoy–Carignano (1663 – 1736), the famous field marshal and diplomat in service of the Habsburgs.

The Lower Belvedere (Unteres Belvedere) was finished in 1716 and was used as residence, whereas today it is used for exhibitions with international reputation.

The former private garden of Prince Eugene, known as the Kammergarten (Privy Garden), offers a particularly secluded ambiance. It is located west of the Lower Belvedere and divided into two terraces.
