Biržai Castle was built as a fortress in 1575-1589 by the hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Krzysztof Radziwill “The Thunderbolt” (1547-1603), in order to defend the northern border of Lithuania.
Since the second half of the 17th century, the castle has been the main seat of the Biržai-Dubingiai line of the princes Radziwill.
The castle was destroyed by Sweden in 1625-1627, rebuilt in a huge defence complex by 1682, but destroyed again in 1704 by the Swedish army.
The castle was not reconstructed until the late 1980s, housing today the Biržai Regional Museum and a library.
