Birr Castle is the seat of the Parsons family, included its presents head, the Seventh Earl of Ross, Brendan Parsons and his family. The castle is only open on specific booked times from May until the end of August, whereas the gardens are open all year round.
The castle is surrounded by woods, lake and garden. The garden includes a romantic hornbeam cloister walk, the Millennium Gardens with plants exclusive to the demesne, the world’s tallest box hedges and the "Great Telescope", designed by the third Earl of Rosse and completed in 1845.
