Calke Abbey & Garden

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Calke Abbey is a large Baroque mansion, built between 1701 and 1704. It has been in the hands if the Harpur family for almost 300 years until it was given to the National Trust in 1957 in lieu of death duties.

The house is a showcase for a country house in decline. It contains the family collection, with many hidden treasures.

The grounds include several features such as a restored deer enclosure, walled gardens, a physic garden, an orangery, a peach house, a 1,200 year old oak tree, the 'Old Men of Calke' and an exceptional Auricula Theatre.
