Carnavalet Museum

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
The Musée Carnavalet is dedicated to the history of Paris and is housed in two neighbouring mansions: the Hôtel Carnavalet and the former Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau. The museum contains vast collections from the Renaissance up to the present day.

The Hôtel Carnavalet was constructed in 1560 and the 1650s renovated by the famous architect Mansart. Madame de Sévigné, the renowned writer, lived there from 1677 until her death in 1696.

The Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau dates back to around the same date as the Hôtel Carnavalet and became property of the Le Pelletier family in the 18th century.
