Castle of Diósgyőr

Castles & Country Houses, Music
The Castle of Diósgyör's medieval origin goes back to the 12th century. However, a century later it was destroyed during the Mongol invasion (1241–42). After the invasion it was reconstructed in the style of the time and got some importance during the reign of King Louis the Great (1342-1382) and became afterwards a wedding gift for the queens of Hungary.

By the end of the 17th century it was already in ruins, and it was not before 2013, that the reconstruction of complete parts of the structure of the castle was undertaken.

In 2014 the reconstructed castle was opened, whereas the rooms are furnished with Mediaeval-style furniture.

There is also an Arena for Jousting Tournaments and an important waxworks exhibition in the outer castle, showing six scenes of everyday life in medieval Diósgyőr.

The Castle Plays are held twice in every year in May and August, whereas the Kalaka Folk Festival is held on the second weekend of July each year.
