Castle Falkenstein, which is used today as a museum and for events, has a long history which dates back to the 12th century. The last member of the von Falkesteins, Count Lothar von der Asseburg-Falkenstein-Rothkirch and his family had to flee to West Germany at the end of WWII.
Since 1996 the castle is in the hands of Stiftung Dome und Schlösser in Sachsen-Anhalt, and open to the public.
