Schloss Kittsee was built as a meierhof early 17th century and later in that century transformed into a palace by Johann Listy, who came from Transylvania. In the middle of the 18th century it was rebuilt as a Baroque palace by Prince Paul Anton Esterhazy, whereas at the end of the 19th century it became the home of Prince Ladislaus Batthyany-Strattmann, the ''doctor of the poor''.
Since 1969 Schloss Kittsee is owned by the municipality of Kittsee, and used for cultural events, such as the Kittsee Summer Festival and the concerts of The Pannonian Forum Kittsee, under the artistic direction of Prof. Rudolf Buchmann.
