It was built as a 'Maison de Plaisance' (finished in 1770) for Carl Theodor, Elector Palatine, and his wife, Elisabeth Auguste.

The park and gardens were restored early 2000. It gardens include a baroque garden and a nineteenth century garden designed by Peter Joseph Lenné.

Benrath houses 3 museums: Museum Corps de Logis, the Museum of Natural Science and the Museum for the Art of Gardening.

It is also uses for cultural, corporate and private events, such as concerts and weddings.
