The site dates back to the 10th century, but the major part of the present construction was built between 1845 and 1857, and is considered as one of the most important complex of romantic Historicism. The main architect was Georg Adler Demmler.

Inside there is a lot to admire, such as the historic apartments of the Ducal family.
