Castle Porcia - Museum of Folk Culture

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres, Music
Schloss Porcia's construction began in 1533, commissioned by Gabriel von Salamanca, and was completed in 1597 according to Italian designs. In 1662 the princes of Porcia acquired the county and administered it until 1918. Since 1951 the castle is property of the municipality if Spittal, and uses it as a cultural center. It houses also the Museum of Folk Culture, dedicated to the cultural history of Upper Carinthia.

The museum displays a wide variety of items and historic sceneries: children's games, school history, and a large number of professions from crafts, mining, alpine farming, to the beginnings of tourism.

The museum offers also interactive media possibilities, such as the  "Carinthian Panorama", which allows you to view all over Carinthia from 10,000 m altitude, whereas you can  "zoom in" and look at your house or any place you like.

Every year the ''Komödienspiele'' are held here, as well as the ''International Choir Competition''.
