Castle Ranis dates back to the 12th century and is at present a museum with additional cultural events such as concerts, lectures...

During its long history Its owners were the Schwarzburgers, the margraves of Meissen, the Wettiners, the Lords of Brandenstein and Breitenbuch as well as the Prussians. In the last century the castle belonged to the German Red Cross before American and Soviet forces occupied it. In 1994 came into the hands of the Palace, Castle and Gardens Trust of Thuringia, who started a long period of restoration, up to the present day.

Museum: The history of the castle, the pre and early history of the Orlagau, regional geology, seismology, art, special exhibitions.
