Château d'Angers

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Château d'Angers, housing today the world famous Apocalypse Tapestry, dates back to the 9th century and is open to the public.

The site was already inhabited by the Romans, which means that the location had a strategic importance. It was expanded to its current size in the 13th century.

In the early 15th century, when the future King Charles VII had to flee Paris, he found protection at the Château d'Angers. He became king with the support of Jeane d'Arc.

Later it became a military academy where Napoleon's enemy, the Duke of Wellington, was trained. After the academy moved to Saumur it was used as a prison.

Now, as property of the City of Angers, it is a museum, displaying the largest and oldest tapestries in the world.

There must have been a medieval garden here and a renaissance garden still exists.
