Château de Castelnaud

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Château de Castelnaud, a medieval fortress, is used since 1985 as Museum of Medieval Warfare. The collection includes more than 250 weapons and pieces of old armour, swords, crossbows, staff weapons, chain mail, a ribaudequin and 14th and 15th century furniture.

The present building dates from the 12th century but was constructed on older foundations. The castle has been closely linked to the Caumont family. However they left the château for their new castle in Les Milandes. Consequently it was rarely occupied since the 17th century and deteriorated further after the Revolution. Listed as a Historic Building in 1966, the castle has been seriously restored.
