Château d'Oiron

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Château d'Oiron is used as a worldwide recognised museum, where a traditional monument displays works of well known contemporary artists.  It is owned by the French state and open all year round.

Oiron has had famous owners. It was built in the 15th century by to Guillaume Gouffier, a trusted friend and chamberlain of François I. His descendants improved and embellied the castle until it was acquired by Madame de Montespan. Her son had little interest in the property and sold it to the Duke de Villeroi. After that the property went into decline until the state took it over before WWII.
