Donegal Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Donegal Castle, dating back to even the Vikings, is a 15th century building.  Today, partially restored, the castle is open to the public and often hosts events such as Gaelic cultural evenings or Ulster-Scots events.

The castle was the stronghold of one of the most powerful Gaelic families in Ireland from the 5th to the 16th centuries, the O'Donnell clan.

Around 1670 the castle was sold to the Gore dynasty, who later became Earls of Arran. The castle fell into a ruinous state and in 1898, the 5th Earl of Arran handed the castle over into the hands of The Office of Public Works, who had it partially restored.
