Güstrow Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Güstrow Castle is the most important Renaissance building in northern Germany, and was designed by the architect Franz Parr. It was built in the 16th century, as the seat of Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg and replacing his old castle, destroyed by fire.

After the Mecklenburg-Güstrow line died out in 1695, Güstrow served only as a secondary residence for the Dukes of Mecklenburg.

Today, after extensive restoration work, the castle serves as a museum, where the visitors can admire the historic state rooms, a permanent exhibition of art and crafts from antiquity to the present, and an exhibition of hunting weapons from the collection of the Duchy of Mecklenburg.

The castle is also used for cultural events and  is one of the venues of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.
