Villa Borghese was created In 1605 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a nephew of Pope Paul V. It was meant to be a 'maison de plaisance', and to house his art collection. The gardens (80 ha), as we know them today, were remade during the 19th century in the English landscape style.

The property, today owned by the Municipality of Rome (since1903), contains a number of buildings. The Villa Borghese itself houses the Galleria Borghese, the Villa Giulia (built in 1551 - 1555 as a summer residence for Pope Julius III) contains the Etruscan Museum (Museo Etrusco), the Villa Medici houses the French Academy in Rome, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna...
