Hardwick Hall & Gardens
Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Hardwick Hall is one of the most important historic houses of Britain. It was designed in the very late 16th century for the historic Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury. It stayed in the hands of her descendants, the Dukes of Devonshire, until 1956, when it was handed over to the National Trust in lieu of death duties.
The house contain a stunning collection of textiles, furniture, paintings, portraits, ceramics and other objects of art.
The garden has been changed many times in the course of the family history, and contains several courts, such as the East court planted with roses, and a recently restored herb garden.
