Holmeegenes was built as a pleasure spot in the 1860s with a combined residential and operational building. It represents urban history, architectural history, garden history and political history, including a large collection of artefacts from World War I to the 1950s

Today, the museum is part of the consolidated Museum Stavanger (MUST).
