Horovice Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Horovice Castle, former residence of Prince-Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Hesse and his descendance until 1945, is today a national cultural monument and open to the public.

The present castle (New Castle) was probably built around the end of the 17th century for the von Vrbno family. In 1852 it was acquired by the the Hessian Elector Friedrich Wilhelm, Prince of Hanau as a gift for his morganatic wife Gertrude Falkenstein. After his forced abdication in 1866 he and his family went into exile and settled down at Horovice.

The castle complex currently consist of the building of the so-called New Chateau with 'Cour-d'Honneur', farm buildings and a park covering an area of approximately 6.4 ha.

During the seventies and eighties of the last century the chateau has been completely renovated, where today the public gets a good impression of how the princes von Hanau lived here until its confiscation in 1945, on the order of president Beneš.
