Monastero dei Benedettini di San Nicolò l'Arena

Monuments & Sites, Museums & Art Centres
Monastero dei Benedettini di San Nicolò l'Arena, dating back to 1500, is the second biggest Benedictine monastery in Europe. Today it hosts the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania, which restored the entire structure. It is open to the public.

The monastery integrates different styles through different epochs: you can find a roman house, the cloisters and a roof garden.

The ‘restoration’ of the Benedictine Monastery, has been in the hands of the architect Giancarlo De Carlo, started in 1984 and lasted more than thirty years.

Within the Monastery you find the The Museo della Fabbrica.

It was created in 2000 in the former kitchen of the Monastery with the idea of creating a museum about the historical and architectonic development of the monastery and its relationship with the town.
