Monserrate Palace

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Monserrate Palace and Park, created and recreated by three Englishmen (Gerard de Visme, William Beckford and Francis Cook) around 1790, 1809 and in 1856 respectively, is nowadays a prominent attraction in Portugal.

With its medieval and Oriental style, the Palace is, together with the Palace of Pena, the best example of Romantic architecture in the country. There is no collection inside to be seen. Its specialty is the architecture itself.

With trees, plants and flowers from all over the world, the park is a botanical jewel.

Since 1949 the estate is owned by the state and has been classified in 1995 by UNESCO as World Heritage. In 2013, it was attributed with the European Garden Award under the category of the “Best Development of a Historic Park or Garden”.
