Montal Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Château de Montal, a beautiful Renaissance castle, has been rescued by the industrialist Maurice Fenaille. Between 1908 and 1913 he spent a fortune for restoration and refurnishing the castle at an exemplary standard.  In 1913 he donated Montal, including its art collection, to the state, keeping the usufruct for himself and his three daughters.

Its history goes back to 1494 when Robert de Balzac acquires the medieval construction. However it is his daughter Jeanne de Balzac, the wife of Amaury II de Montal, who transformed the building in a Renaissance castle between 1519 et 1534. After that it passed into different hands and in particular during the 19th century the castle was seriously neglected.

The castle and its collection can be visited by the public.
