Museum Calouste Gulbenkian is part of the similarly named Foundation, and houses one of the largest private art and antiquaries collections in the world. It was created according the last will of the Portugal-based oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian.

Gulbenkian (1869-1955), a global businessman and philanthropist, was of Armenian origin, with British nationality and based in Portugal.

His Foundation has a wide range of cultural and scientific activities continues to promote arts, music, social engagement, education, and science all over the world.

The building is surrounded by a modern Portuguese landscape garden, designed by landscape architects António Viana Barreto and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles.
