Museo nazionale “Giuseppe Andreassi” e Parco archeologico di Egnazia, standing outside the town walls of ancient Gnathia (present-day Egnazia), in the area of the Messapian necropolis, displays thirty centuries of history of the important settlement, from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages.

The archaeological park of Egnazia: The first settlement of ancient Gnathia dates from the 16th century BC. In the Iron Age the site was occupied by the Iàpigi who gave rise to the Messapian civilisation, which ended with the Roman occupation in the third century BC. C. From the Messapian period remain the defence walls and the necropolis. From the Roman period the vestiges are preserved. Noteworthy are the remains of the Via Traiana, the civil basilica with the hall of the Three Graces, the chapel of the oriental divinities, the porticoed square, the cryptoporticus and the baths. In addition, there are four early Christian basilicas, two of which had originally mosaic floors.

The museum and site are managed by Direzione regionale musei Puglia, which promotes and coordinates the museums and archaeological sites in Puglia.
