Panorama Mesdag

Museums & Art Centres
The Panorama Mesdag is a cylindrical painting (14 m high -120 meters in circumference), which was painted by one of the most important painters of the The Hague School, Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831 – 1915) , with help from his friends.

The panorama gives you a 360 degree vista of the sea, the dunes and the fishing village of Scheveningen as it was in 1881, and is the oldest 19th century panorama in the world on its original site.

In addition, the museum contains almost one hundred paintings by the painter and his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten.

Mesdag, a banker who had studied art, had married Sina van Houten in 1856. When they inherited a fortune from her father, Mesdag retired from banking at the age of 35 to become a professional painter.

In 1903 he donated his house, the seat of the museum, and his collection of paintings to the State.
