Piber Castle, Bundesgestüt Piber, is since 1798 home to the famous Lipizzan stud, dedicated to breeding the Lipizzaner stallions of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, known all over the world. The Piber facilities are open to the public, as well as the museum where you can learn everything about the history of the Lipizzans.
Piber, already mentioned in 1100 was until 1786 a domain of the St. Lambrecht Benedictine Abbey in upper Styria. In 1786, by decree of Emperor Joseph II, the St. Lambrecht Abbey was secularized, whereas in 1798, its present function at Piber began.
