Residence Castle Altenburg houses the castle museum & museum for playing cards Altenburg. The castle has a long history linked to the different lines of the House of Saxe. From 1826 Altenburg became the capital of Saxe-Altenburg with the castle as residence for the dukes.
The last duke abdicated in 1918 during the Revolution and was promised 12 million Marks and the ownership of numerous castles. The free-state of Saxe-Altenburg was merged with Thuringia in 1920.
Altenburg is also a venue for corporate and private events, such as receptions, banquets, weddings...
