Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Royal Palace of Caserta, is one of the largest royal residences in the world and is surrounded by a 120 ha baroque park, with formal vistas, fountains and cascades. The plans were made by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, commissioned by Charles VII.
The constructions started in 1752, but Charles VII became king of Spain in 1759, and abdicated in favour of his third son Ferdinand IV, who only partially completed the original project. However it still got 1200 rooms, a large library, a theatre and a chapel, inspired by Versailles.
There is also an English garden from 1780, designed by Luigi Vanvitelli's son Carlo and John Graefer, a from origin German landscape designer.
