Schloss Hernstein

Hernstein Castle, today a hotel and a venue for corporate and private events, was built between 1727 and 1730 by Count Karl Joseph von Heussenstein, who had the then existing manor house transformed into a stately home with a chapel. The estate did not stay long in the Heussenstein family, because in 1798 the estate passed on to Baron Heinrich von Müller. He created the park and built the dam to form the artificial lake with its island.

The castle, as we know it today, was transformed from 1856-1880 under Archduke Ludwig, a nephew of Emperor Franz II. He commissioned the architect Theophil von Hansen to redesign the castle into one of the most important Historism (English gothic) buildings in Austria.

Today, the castle's historic rooms are mostly preserved in their original state and are used for meetings, seminars, wedding ceremonies...
