Sissinghurst Castle Garden
Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Sissinghurst Castle Garden is one of the most influential gardens in the world, may be also because it was created by the historical socialite couple Vita Sackville-West, poet and writer, and her husband Herold Nicolson, author and diplomat.
The couple acquired the estate in 1930 and worked with a number of notable head gardeners. The design is based on axial walks that open onto enclosed "garden rooms".
Vita Sackville-West was born at Knole, the ancestral home of the Sackvilles, and one of the largest houses in England.
Upon Vita Sackville-West's death in 1962 Sissinghurst was donated to the National Trust.
