Slovenska Bistrica Castle, originally a farm, was first mentioned as a castle in 1313, whereas in 1587 the castle became private property with its first owner, the Vetter (von der Lilie) family, who expanded it between the years 1590-1651. The most important private owners were the Counts Attems, who acquired the castle in 1717 and retained it until its nationalisation at the end of WW II.
The counts Attems made important adaptations such as the creation of the Knights' Hall in the East wing and all frescoes in the castle, which were made by the Attems family's fresco painter, Franz Ignaty Flurer (1688-1742).
Today, the renovated castle is used for permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as other cultural events such as lectures and concerts.
Slovenska Bistrica Castle is also a venue for corporate and private events, such as receptions, symposiums, weddings...
