Castles & Country Houses, Music
The Sponza Palace dates from the 16th century and has been used for many public purposes, such as customs office, mint, armoury...Today it houses the city archives, which contains documents dating back to the 12th century, with the earliest manuscript being from 1022.
The palace is always the backdrop for the opening ceremony of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, whereas the palace itself, with its famous atrium, is also used as a performance venue. The Festival is held every year between 10 July and 25 August, with a rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance performances.
