Stainz Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Event, Film & Wedding Hire, Museums & Art Centres
Stainz Castle was constructed in 1229 as an Augustinian monastery by Luitbold von Wildon. The monastery was secularised in 1785 under Emperor Joseph II and became the property of the State. In 1840 Archduke Johann bought the castle from the State for 250,000 guilders. Today the castle is in the hands of his descendants, the Counts of Meran, and serves as a residential as well as an economic seat.

Stainz is an ideal party and wedding venue, for the civil ceremony, the reception, the church wedding in the baroque Church of St. Catherine, the banquet in the former refectory with its ornate frescoes...

The love story of Archduke Johann and Anna Plochl, the daughter of Jacob Plochl, postmaster of Bad Aussee, is legendary. The archduke waited ten long years until his brother, Emperor Franz II, allowed him to marry her, however he was excluded from succession to the throne. His descendants were styled "Counts of Meran".

For nature lovers Stainz offers pedagogical and subject-specific tours in the forest reserves of  Stainz and "Rosenkogel".

Furthermore the castle complex houses 2 museums: the Hunting Museum, dedicated to the long hunting tradition in Styria, and the Agricultural Museum, dedicated to past, present and future of agricultural work. (see also the separate page on Tripendy for these museums)
