Villa Adriana
Gardens & Parks, Monuments & Sites
Villa Adriana was constructed early 2nd century AD, as a retreat for Emperor Hadrian. However probably after 128 AD, he used it as his official residence and governed the empire from here.
The place was very extensive, and housed several thousand people: staff, visitors, servants and slaves. In order to keep the site quiet and more peaceful, it has a network of underground tunnels.
Until the 4th century the Villa was occasionally used by his successors, but fell into decay afterwards. It was Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este (1509 – 1572) , who used an important number of statues and marble for his Villa d'Este.
