Villa Rufolo

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres, Music
Villa Rufolo was built in the 13th century for the Rufolo family, but was extensively transformed in the 19th century by Scotsman Francis Neville Reid. The famous Renaissance writer Boccaccio wrote in his 'Decamerone' (1353) a story about the villa and its (Rufolo) owner.

The initial layout dates from the 13th century, with extensive remodelling in the 19th century.

The villa has a magnificent garden, overlooking the Amalfi Coast and the Gulf of Salermo.

Richard Wagner, who visited Villa Rufolo in 1880, recognised in the villa's garden his ideal setting for the Klingsor garden in the second act of 'Parsifal', which he wrote during his stay in Ravello.

As a result, Villa Rufolo has become the centre of the annual music festival featuring piano concerts, chamber music, and a grand orchestral performance.

The villa, including a small museum, and the gardens are open to the public.
