Vorau Abbey Castle - Stift Vorau

Castles & Country Houses, Monuments & Sites
Vorau Abbey, was founded in 1163 and is the only Augustinian monastery that still exists in Styria. The impressive complex of buildings in the style of the Viennese High Baroque, as we know it today, was designed beginning around 1700 by the imperial engineer Matthias Steinl.

With its 20 rooms, the Baroque Hall, the Princes' Chamber and three seminar rooms, the Education Center offers a unique place for adult education, within monastic atmosphere, and private overnight guests.

The church was also redesigned around 1700 by Matthias Steinl.

The sacristy is richly decorated with frescos by the abbey's resident painter, Johann Cyriak Hackhofer, made between 1715 and 1716.

The unique library contains 40,000 printed books, documents, paintings, collections, 416 manuscripts and 206 incunabula.

Vorau Abbey can be visited by guided tour.
