Water Castle Kapellendorf dates back to mid-12th century and was built by the burggraves of Kirchberg. Today the castle houses the Castle Museum presenting the castle's eventful history, from its beginnings in the 12th century to the battle of Jena and Auerstedt.

The castle serves as Prussian headquarters in October 1806 during the Napoleonic battle of Jena and Auerstedt.
