West Green House Gardens

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Music
West Green House was built by General Henry Hawley around 1720. In the first half of the 20th century it was lived in by Evelyn, Dowager Duchess of Wellington through the generosity of Sir Victor Sassoon, who had acquired it for her.

She lived there until her death in 1939, whereas Sir Victor donated West Green House to the National Trust in 1957.

The present tenant is Marylyn Abbott, who bought the lease of 99 years from the National Trust in 1993. She carefully restored and developed the Gardens, by adding new and contemporary features to it. Marylyn also introduced 'The Opera Season', a yearly Summer Opera Festival.

The house is not open for the public, however the gardens are opened to the public from March to December each year.
