Witley Court (Ruins) & Gardens

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Witley Court (Ruins) today is what is left of one of the greatest country houses of England. It was built for the 1st Baron Foley in the 17th century on the site of a former manor house, and greatly expanded twice during the 19th century.

Once by the architect John Nash for the Foley family. The second massive reconstruction was executed for the new owner, the Earl of Dudley, by the architect Samuel Daukes, whereas the gardens were redesigned by William Andrews Nesfield.

After a fire in 1937, which destroyed one wing of the house, the owner of the time, Sir Herbert Smith, decided to sell the property, with the result that it was sold, broken up in lots.

In 1972 the poor remains were taken into care by the authorities, and today the ruins and gardens are in the care of the English Heritage, whereas the freehold is in private hands.
