Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Zvolen Castle, dating back as far as the 12th century, is today used as a branch of the Slovak National Gallery, housing a large collection of old masters and master paintings, from the 13th to the 21st centuries. Zvolen, as we see it more or less today, was commissioned by Louis I of Hungary, and completed in 1382.
It was rebuilt many times, but always kept its Renaissance look. The castle was often used by the famous King Matthias Corvinius (1443–90) and his wife Beatrice.
