Kunsthaus Zürich

Museums & Art Centres
Kunsthaus Zürich houses one of the most important art collections in the country brought together by the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, the local art association founded in 1787. The collection spans from the Middle Ages to contemporary art, from the works of great Old Masters to masterworks of our time.

The museum was opened in 1910, whereas the building was designed by the architects Karl Moser and Robert Curiel. Several extensions have been necessary in course of the 20th century, in 1925, 1958 and 1976, due to the numerous donations.

Also in the 21th century a strong need for another extension was felt, leading to the architectural competition for a $230 million extension, which was won by David Chipperfield. The new building is scheduled to be completed in 2021 and will, amongst others, display in specially designed galleries on the second floor of the extension, the essence and scope of the Emil Bührle Collection.
